Alexa Weather Skills

One of the things I use Alexa for most often is the weather forecast. Well, I am English! Getting the weather report is a built-in Alexa skill, you don’t have to download or install anything. At it’s most basic, you only need to say:

Alexa, what’s the weather forecast?”

or, if you like to keep things short, just

Alexa, weather

However Alexa has much more to offer than that. In this post I’ll be going through some of Alexa’s more advanced features and showing you how to use them.

The standard weather response is to give the forecast for today. However you can change this to make it more or less specific. You can ask for the weather forecast for a particular day or even time. you can also ask for a long term forecast. Here are a couple of things to try:

Alexa, what will the weather be like at 5pm?

Alexa, what will the weather be tomorrow?

Alexa, weather forecast for next Tuesday

Alexa, give me the weather for the next week

As usual, you don’t have to use these exact words but can rephrase them however feels natural to you.

Alexa will default to using the location you set in the app for your weather forecast. However you can also get the forecast for almost anywhere in the world. All you need to do is specify a different location, which can be precise or general as you want. This can be useful if you’re planning to travel, to keep up to date with extreme weather events around the world or possibly for educational purposes. Here are some examples:

Alexa, weather in New York

Alexa, what’s the weather like in Fulham?

Alexa, give me the weather forecast for Paris, Texas

You can combine place and time, like this:

Alexa, what will the weather be like in Berlin tomorrow?

Alexa, weather for Plymouth next Monday

Wrong Location or Date

Sometimes after specifying a location, Alexa seems to become ‘stuck’ on that place. The result is that next time you ask for a weather forecast she’ll use the wrong location. To fix the wrong location issue, simply ask for another weather forecast and specify your actual location, like this:

Alexa, weather in Mytown

If you still get a forecast for the wrong location then check the app and make sure your home location is set correctly.

Very occasionally, she also gets stuck on the date for the forecast. You can fix this by just asking:

Alexa, weather today

Types of Weather

If you’re interested in – or worried about – a particular type of weather then you can ask Alexa something like:

Alexa, what’s the temperature?

Alexa, will it rain tomorrow?

Alexa, will it snow in Quebec on Friday?

As to where Alexa actually gets the weather forecast from, that remains a mystery. I’ve tried asking her but she won’t tell!
