Putting Things In Perspective with Alexa

The universe is big. As Douglas Adams put it:

Space is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is.

To demonstrate the vastness of the universe, Adams invented the Total Prspective Vortex. In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy this was used as torture.

Personally, I find the vastness of space to be awe-inspiring and wonderful. Alexa can’t reproduce the full of the effect of the Total Perspective Vortex but she can give you a taster. Try asking these questions:

  • How far away is the moon in miles?
  • How far is the sun in miles?
  • How long would it take to walk to the sun?
  • How many miles away is the nearest star past the sun?
  • What is the diameter of our galaxy in miles?
  • How many stars are there in our galaxy?
  • How many galaxies are there in the universe?
  • How many stars are there in the universe?

I’ve tested all those questions with Alexa, I expect they’d work on Siri as well.
